Ahi
del Sol, the Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacores),
is handline caught of the tropical open waters of Barangay Tamber
located in the coastal city of General Santos, Philippines.
Yellowfin is highly prized for their speed and strength when
fought on rod and reel as well as for their table qualities.
This fish is popularly used in raw fish dishes, especially sashimi.
Yellowfin is also excellent for grilling,
seared or rare. |
| Ahi
del Sol is a privately run company owned and operated
by Soledad Manangquil. Sol works with fishing vessels called
“pongas.” They function as themothership to smaller
fishig boats which are used to capture the Yellowfin tuna. The
catch method used is hook
and line and the Yellowfin Tuna is the
targeted species.
Unlike the longline catch method which will produce large amounts
of by-catch, the handline method uses a single hook and by-catch
is virtually non-existent. What little by-catch is caught is
sold at the local market. |
