Our historyIn the early 1980's Jordan Bow researched developing aquaculture programs in Hawaii. Enthused by his findings Jordan began to market Hawaiian Blue prawns to fine dining establishments throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1985 a business was born as Royal Hawaiian Seafood.
It did not take long before chefs were asking for a variety of seafood products from Hawaii and other South Pacific regions. Jordan soon had the Royal Hawaiian Seafood team sourcing many exotic products to match that growing demand. From its beginnings Royal Hawaiian Seafood has also supported local and regional sources by purchasing directly from fishermen and farmers. Royal Hawaiian Seafood has developed a reputation that is synonymous with high quality products and service.
For 25 years Jordan has been inspired and challenged through working directly with fishermen and farmers from all over the world. The desire to develop and promote sustainable fisheries led Jordan to hire a sustainability director to help Royal Hawaiian create a safety and sustainability program. Royal Hawaiian is commited to not only providing seafood that is safe, sustainable, traceable, and tested by an independent third party, but going beyond their own business to create positive change. As a past teacher, Jordan believes that education is the most important component of the sustainability movement and Royal Hawaiian's Sustainability program "is about educating ourselves, the fishing community, and consumers." While Jordan is motivated by his desire to improve the state of fisheries, he also realizes that embracing sustainability makes good business sense. "The inescapable conclusion is that you must take sustainability seriously and protect the resources you depend on if you want to have a business that is sustainable for years to come," says Jordan.
Royal Hawaiian has come a long way in 25 years. We now carry a wide variety of sustainable products, including many great local options. We provide traceable information and test our seafood to be within key government safety guidelines. The testing spans mercury concentration, histamine, radiation and will soon include select pathogens. Our sustainability program also includes a responsible sourcing commitment, education, traceability from source to sale, and a fish fund dedicated to fishery improvements.
